If you think using oils as a moisturiser for the face will cause breakouts and leave your skin feeling greasy, think again!
Oils have been around for thousands of years. Many civilisations have relied on oils from many different sources. And they appear to be making a comeback.
I couldn’t be happier.
So, why do I love oils so much?
The answer is simple: oils enhance the quality of your skin.
How? Their chemical structure means that they improve cell cohesion, which limits water loss through the skin.
For that reason, oils are protective by nature. They help the skin retain moisture, locking in molecules that contribute towards healthy skin. Oils are also quickly and deeply absorbed into the skin.
All of this leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated.
Oils also tend to be more pure. Face creams and lotions are usually water based. This means they have a greater risk of growing bacteria and mould and something needs to be added to stop this – preservatives.
Creams and lotions can also contain more ingredients. The problem here is that it increases the chances for your skin to react.
Oils however, can be made from as little as one single ingredient, lowering the chances of skin irritation.
Less can be more in this case.
As I have already outlined, oils are extremely pure. When extracted properly, they contain a host of molecules that are extremely supportive to healthy skin.
Vitamins and minerals can help counter the effects of the sun, reducing photo-damage and wrinkles. Research has also shown they minimise the impact of free radicals, the by-product of chemical reactions that occur in the body. Finally, they help support the building blocks of your body, ensuring cells are repaired and well maintained.
This can help to reduce signs of ageing. Some oils packed with antioxidants will do an amazing job at preventing the formation of wrinkles. Oils rich in Vitamin E such as Marula or Cacay are great choices for this.
Oils are also great at protecting the skin. They will create a protective barrier. This allows moisture will stay in and toxins, pollution and other bad stuff will stay out. This is very important if you live in a big city but also during winter when the weather can be harsh on the skin. Rosehip is a great choice for that.
One more thing.
Oils help to soothe irritated skin. This is because some oils have anti-inflammatory properties and can help your skin feel better. Argan or Almond oils are a great choice if you are sensitive or if you are using popular anti-ageing products such as retinol or AHA.
You have two choices – oil blends or single ingredient oils.
Oil blends tend to have essential oils added to them so they usually smell beautiful and offer a full aromatherapy experience, as well as taking care of your skin.
But bear this in mind if you have sensitive skin, it is better to stick to a single ingredient oil. Your skin is less likely to react.

Organic Balancing Safflower & Basil Facial Oil by True Skincare is lovely. This is the oil that you need if you have combination or oily skin and are reluctant about using oils. This is an amazing blend that will balance your skin, whilst hydrating it. It is light and easily absorbed. The Safflower oil has a high content of linoleic acid, which is great at helping clear the pores and regulates the creation of sebum (your skin’s natural oil). The addition of Basil adds antibacterial and antioxidant properties to this oil, which is great if you suffer from acne.
